Often, we see patients who show the symptoms of having problems with their temporomandibular joint (TMJ—also known as the jaw joint). TMJ dysfunction can be extremely painful and have side effects that can impact your entire life. We can provide the treatment you need to be free from discomfort and protect your teeth from further damage.

How TMJ Dysfunction Occurs

Your jaw joint is a ball-and-socket joint that is located just in front of your ear. When it becomes inflamed, you are said to have dysfunction in the jaw joint. The signs that you may have this issue include:

  • Continual fatigue
  • Poor concentration
  • Poor sleep
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Ear pain and numbness
  • Facial and jaw pain
  • Clicking and popping in the jaw
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain

You may have resorted to taking pain medications to try to cope with your discomfort. TMJ problems won’t go away, however, by covering them up with medicines. Instead, you can find a resolution to your TMJ dysfunction with us.

The Dangers of Leaving TMJ Problems Untreated

Woman waking up with jaw painIf you grind and clench your teeth at night, also called bruxism, it can lead to many problems. Some are listed above. Others include wearing on your teeth, breakage of your teeth and pain that doesn’t ever seem to go away. Whatever it is that’s causing your TMJ issue likely won’t go away on its own. If you don’t do anything about it, you may end up with permanent damage to your teeth and discomfort that plagues you during the day and night.

Splints to Protect Your Teeth

The simplest way to address TMJ-related grinding or clenching is with a splint. This device looks similar to a mouthguard worn for sport. It’s snug-fitting and covers about half of your teeth. You’ll be able to breathe comfortably with it in, though it can take some time to get used to. You’ll wear the splint during the nighttime hours to prevent yourself from being able to damage your smile by grinding and clenching. Plus, it will relieve the pain of your frequent headaches and other forms of discomfort.
