Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Treatment at Narrogin Dental Group

Woman covering her ears with a pillow while man snoresIf you’re a chronic snorer or suffer from sleep apnoea, there’s a good chance that you’re not getting a good night’s sleep. But did you know that your dentist might be able to provide a solution to help you sleep better and lead a happier and healthier lifestyle?

What is Sleep Apnoea?

Obstructive sleep apnoea is a condition triggered by the loss of tone in the soft tissues in the back of your throat during sleep. When you lie down to sleep, these tissues seal against each other, causing repetitive blockages of the upper airways and restricting oxygen flow. Symptoms may include persistent snoring, tossing and turning, or even cause you to stop breathing through the night.

If you suffer from sleep apnoea, you may be experiencing daytime sleepiness, dry mouth or throat in the mornings, fatigue, moodiness or headaches.

Non-invasive Snoring Solution

At Narrogin Dental Group, our dentists may be able to offer you a non-invasive solution to combat the effects of snoring and certain types of sleep apnoea.

A custom-fit jaw device may offer fast and effective results for snoring and mild sleep apnoea. These aids work by gently pulling your lower jaw forward, opening your airway and allowing you to breathe more freely.

Oral sleep devices have a number of advantages over CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines in that they are portable, less obtrusive, they make no noise, and are not reliant on a power source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my oral appliance need to be custom fitted?

You may have seen over-the-counter dental devices that claim to prevent snoring. These are usually cheaper, but may not work as well.

Custom- fit devices are moulded to fit your jaw and mouth shape, ensuring that they are suited to your needs and comfort. The device can also be adjusted over time, which means your dentist can fine-tune your appliance to maximise effectiveness and avoid side effects.

What can I expect when I come to your clinic?

Before treating the symptoms of snoring or sleep apnoea, it’s important to get a proper diagnosis to rule out any other underlying medical causes of your sleep disruption.

Our experienced dentists will work closely with your physician to ensure that your sleep problem isn’t due to any other factors or doesn’t require any other form of treatment.

Once we’ve determined that you’re a good candidate for the use of an oral device, we will fit you for your custom-made device. We’ll monitor you regularly to make sure everything is going smoothly.

Will my oral sleep appliance be covered by my health insurance?

If you have dental cover as part of your private health insurance policy, your oral sleep appliance may be covered. We recommend that you check with your health fund prior to commencing treatment.
